LED light therapy

LED light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that penetrates the layers of the skin to improve its condition. It uses different colors of light, each penetrating the skin at varying depths:

  • Blue light: Targets the uppermost layer of the skin and may help eliminate acne-causing bacteria.
  • Red light: Penetrates deeper, reducing inflammation and stimulating collagen production, which can result in a more youthful appearance.
  • Yellow light: Works at medium depth, improving skin texture.
  • Near-infrared light: Penetrates the deepest and may promote tissue regeneration.

The therapy can be used for various conditions, including eczema, hair loss, mild to moderate acne, psoriasis, rosacea, sun damage, wounds, and wrinkles. In some cases, it is also used for treating superficial basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer).

Achieving effective results requires regular treatments. Clinic-based treatments use higher light intensity, making them potentially more effective than home devices. With home LED masks and other devices, more modest improvements are expected.

It is important to note that LED light therapy is not effective for treating cystic acne, blackheads, or whiteheads. Additionally, some research suggests that blue light therapy may contribute to skin aging due to free radical damage.
